At Sound Foundations NW, our volunteers are building transitional tiny homes as alternatives to tents and encampments to end unsheltered homelessness in the Greater Seattle region. Working five days per week, we've built more than 760 tiny homes, and counting, since we began in 2018. Our goal is a regional inventory of tiny homes, deployed in tiny home villages run by our service provider partners, to provide warm, safe, and dry alternatives to our neighbors on the streets while they wait, sometimes years, for a permanent, affordable home and also receive services to help permanently end their homelessness. As of June, 2026, there are now 27 tiny home village locations, either built or pending, that use our tiny homes. See a map of approximate village locations on our website. And with enough tiny homes and villages to shelter every person who needs one in a safe, dignified, and supportive tiny home, our public parks, streets, and greenbelts are also more available for everyone's enjoyment.

The idea for our Sell One, Buy Two campaign started in 2024 when a local Seattle family, the Dettweilers, downsized from their longtime family home in Seattle and empty-nested to a nearby, more rural area. Having owned their Seattle home more than 20 years, they decided to dedicate a small portion of their home's appreciation back into their community as a parting contribution. So before reinvesting in their next home, the family also sponsored the cost of an SFNW-built tiny home, just $4500, to leave behind -- Sell One Home, Buy Two . Knowing that historically each tiny home shelters up to three people per year on their transition out of homelessness, and that our homes are architect-designed to last 20 years, the Dettweilers left behind a legacy that will help up to 60 people move from the streets into a permanent home over the coming years.

Now, with the help of longtime volunteer, Brian Riggs, we're sharing the idea of the Dettweilers' generosity with others in our region who care about ending unsheltered homelessness. By re-directing just a very small portion of your home's long-term appreciation into a transitional tiny home before you reinvest in your next primary home, homeowners like you can also create a lasting legacy that tackles one of our region's most glaring social problems.

Thank you for wanting to take action on behalf of our neighbors who are homeless and for your willingness to share your good fortune. Your compassion and generosity help us build this network and shelter every neighbor who needs it with safety, dignity, and a long-term plan. Remember, Homelessness Is Solvable if you believe it is and have a plan. We do.
